The Scriptures He gave us are without error and remain our only rule of faith and practice. By His grace, we make a conscious effort to submit to the Bible entirely. In order to better understand and submit to the Scripture, we enlist the help of those Christians who have gone before us, reading the Word and interpreting it, recording their faith in the historic Christian creeds and confessions.
As congregations with direct roots in the historic Reformed churches on the European continent, we joyfully unite ourselves around the basic teachings of God’s Word as summarized in the “Three Forms of Unity”. We continue to be amazed at the clarity, relevance, and comfort these three writings offer Christ’s Church:
was written by Zacharias Ursinus, professor of theology at Heidelberg University, and Caspar Olevianus, court preacher for Elector Frederick III of the German Palatinate, in 1563. Our catechism is divided in three sections going by the nicknames “Guilt,” “Grace,” and “Gratitude,” instructing us so clearly in the Law and Gospel that even our children can be led by it to understand and embrace their covenant God.
is attributed to Guido de Bres, a preacher in the Reformed Churches of the Netherlands, in 1561. de Bres died a martyr to the faith in 1567 amidst perhaps the most fierce persecution ever by the Roman Catholic Church against the Reformed churches in the Netherlands. This confession is the best place to look for a comprehensive summary of the Reformed faith, especially as it is distinguished from other Christian traditions.
also called the Five Articles Against the Remonstrants, were composed and adopted by an international meeting of Reformed church leaders in 1618-1619. The doctrine explained and defended in the Canons relates specifically to the great and gracious salvation God has wrought for us. Today, the Canon’s teachings are commonly referred to as the “five points of Calvinism.” We find great comfort that, in spite of our sin and disobedience, our salvation is grounded in the eternal, unalterable will of God.
